Once the axe falls, marketing, public relations and advertising budgets are typically among the first to go. This is because executives often believe that they can survive for a while without spending the extra cash to promote the product or service. The truth is large businesses can survive if they’ve built a strong enough brand. As for small businesses, however, nothing could be further from the truth.

Over my 16+ years as a producer, host and writer, I’ve seen my share of bad media pitches, but the one I got yesterday was THE worst.

It was from a guy who bills himself as a PR pro. He probably doesn’t know that I know him, but I do. He’s achieved a reasonable amount of success I guess; but not without using a few “slimy” tactics now and then–but that’s a whole other topic…

Anyway, he got wind that I needed a guest for my show to discuss the Obama presidency, so he wanted to pitch his client. His very generic pitch looked something like this:
